Strategic Research Leadership Symposia

Evaluation

The Strategic Research Leadership Symposia was designed as a two-symposium series, bringing together a cohort of research leaders from across UKRI investments. Its purpose is to create high-quality opportunities for influential leaders to connect, reflect, and explore new approaches to strategic research leadership.

In March 2025, following the second Symposium in London, Bridget Mellifont (Pennycook Consultancy) completed a mid-point evaluation of the project, reviewing the design and delivery of the programme, levels of engagement, and impact. Please see that evaluation output below.

In response to strong participant feedback and a positive formal evaluation, UKRI has confirmed funding for a third Symposium. This additional gathering will reunite the cohort to support both personal and professional growth through focused sessions and engagement with sector experts. It will also offer dedicated time to strengthen networks, exchange insights, and deepen shared understanding of strategic leadership across the research landscape.

Strategic Research Leadership Symposia 2025 Final Evaluation Report

Evaluation remains central to our approach. Symposia 3 (March 2026) will serve as a key point for assessing the longitudinal impact of the first two events, one year on. During this symposium, we will continue to collect primary data on the evolving needs, priorities, and challenges of this cohort of senior researchers. All data will be systematically analysed and synthesised, and the evaluation framework will be updated to reflect new findings, insights, and evidence-based recommendations.
